This from Troy Duster, the incoming president of the American Sociological Association.
The mainstream media has quickly dissolved into "moral values" as an explanation, and has not pursued the dramatic story of the conflict between a) paper ballot and exit poll consistency versus b) electronic ballot results and exit poll contradictions.
It has apparently caught the attention of the non-partisan Government Accounting Office (although this will not be corroborated until Monday) -- and it should certainly catch ours!!!
…there is something we can do in the next six days!!
http://www.truthout.org/docs_04/110604Z.shtml Here is an article for more information. And if you want to help the organization that wants to challenge the election results within the next 6 days go to
www.blackboxvoting.org and give money. Visit the site for more info on that.
I gave $100.
Remember, if we don’t fix this, we’ll never be able to get into power to fix it.

Ooo! Information!
*feasts*
*sighs* Stupid corruption.
it makes one wonder what would actually happen if it came into light that kerry did indeed win the election..he conceeded..does that mean he could not be put into office?
i keep praying for a miracle..praying to ancient gods and dusty gods hiding in cathedrals..praying it was all a big fat mistake.
Wonderfully informative sites, Prom, thank you for sharing.
I don't understand why people automatically assume this whole exit pole deal doesn't just prove the inaccuracy of exit poles. Obviously they don't ask everyone, so perhaps they just polled a population that was heavy in kerry supporters, but wasn't an actual representation of real percentages.
I do, however, think this whole electronic vote with no paper trail business is bull crap. We definitely need to get this crap fixed before the next election.
And just for the record, though I may be the only bush supporter on this site, I want it to be known that as much as I dislike the idea of having Kerry as president, I dislike the idea of Bush illigitemately winning the election even more. And please don't bring up the last election, because I was only in 10th grade at the time and all I really remember about it was being happy because we used to be able to waste a good 20 minutes at the start of History class every day talking about all that was going on.
The reason why this election doesn't prove the inaccuracy of exit poles is because exit polls are historically very strong predictors of outcomes. This discussion gets into the statistics of surveying, etc and I won't go there right now, but suffice to say that when done correctly, a presidential survey/exit poll will be correct within a couple percentage points up or down. It is totally legitimate to ask the question: why are we trusting the tallied vote instead of the exit polls? because the chances of error on the voting-machine side are actually larger than those of the exit polls (and by that I mean statistically significant error, greater than 5%).
And to add to what Herzog says, I would love to be able to rely on the results, but the system was designed not to be able to do that. There is no way to reconcile the difference between the exit polls and the reported "actual" results because there was no paper trail. And a paper trail was something people knew we wouldn't have years before this election, but was fought by Republicans. They also fought (unsuccessfully) to prohibit exit polling. That makes them the prime suspects in voter fraud.
Now, I don't really think we can rely on exit polls. But since we certainly can't rely on the actual tally, we really should vote again, in the states where it could have made a difference. There's time to do that, so I don't know why we can't.
Glad to see you agree that the vote needs to be credible, mightyjoscro. I too would accept a tally I could trust, if it went to Bush. I wouldn't like it, but I like democracy.
They're light, so easy to carry and great for keeping you cozy when the sun goes down plus the ugg boots will hide any of those inevitable spills! So if your looking for the perfect ugg to see you through the seasons and help give you the legs you've always dreamed of then the uggs are the one for you! One of the biggest footwear trends in the last decade has been the UGG Australia and the other various styles coming out of New Zealand and Australia. ugg slippers have come from a few simple styles, and evolved into so many different variations with some even designed for men. You might have also been wondering why do you see so many women wearing sheepskin ugg slippers boots during the warmer seasons?
