  • Such A Serious Writer

Hello everyone.  Long time no see.  Thank you for coming to class.  I hope you didn’t get bored looking at the same old blog every day wondering, “when is the porfessor going to get here?”

Prometheus the porfessor is here.  And today I’m going to talk about writing.

    writers write.

I have been writing, believe it or not.  15 minutes a day.  I haven’t missed a day since I started it.  That’s how serious a writer I have become.

Writing every day like that makes one realize things.  Like that 15 minutes a day does not guarantee professional success.  Boxers don’t win fights on 15 minute workouts.  Chess players don’t master the game playing only 15 minutes a day.  You cannot learn Spanish in 15 minutes a day (but if you believe you can, I’ll sell you some tapes). You can not earn enough to live working a job 15 minutes a day, can you? (I wish - I think there are some tapes out there for that too).

On the other hand, the reason I started doing this was that I saw the definite and significant improvement in my daughter’s piano playing over time, practicing 15 minutes or sometimes less, but every day.  Could she be better?  Not if we pushed her so hard she didn’t want to do it she couldn’t.

But I don’t expect to be a professional writer on 15 minutes a day.  Not to be discouraging though, I must say that the difference between 15 minutes and nothing is, the difference between something and nothing.  Worlds.

So 15 minutes a day is all I am asking of you (for now).

    Porfessor out.

  • Hmmm

If not 15 minutes I wonder how long.

Sometimes I do two or three hours, sometimes I go two or three days with out writing.

    At least I'm getting better.

  • I like that. I think I'll employ that technique. Dog knows I need it...

  • I tried morning pages once (3 pages, free write using pen and standard 11x13 paper first thing every morning). I know it would have helped me - I'm just not the kind of person who profits from forcing myself to do anything. I've been told that regularity is the key to improving ones writing, though. Like inculcating a habit. But I do it strictly for enjoyment. When it's not fun, I tend to get resentful. I might feel differently if I were trying to do it professionally, of course.

  • You've inspired me.  I used to not be able to write unless I was emotionally upset, depressed, anxious, suicidal... Now I can't write because i'm relatively content.... but I'm going to try your 15 minutes a day.... I will start fresh tomorrow morning. Thanks for the inspiration.

  • You inspired me to write something.

I'm not sure if I took more or less than 15 minutes to write it, however.

  • javagrendel - I call mine morning pages, unless I'm writing in the evening, then I call them nightime pages, alphabetically after morning - so the files show up that way on my computer.  So I don't follow that Artist's Way edict that it should be with pen and paper.  My 15 minutes translates to about a page on my computer, based on my margins and font size and such.

Orlando - I find writing to be my best method for working my way out of depression, so I certainly don't knock writing at those times.  It should be interesting to see what comes out when you capture the whole picture though.

  • I write every day for at least 30 minutes.  It's been a very worthwhile exercise as far as growth.

  • perhaps i should apply this to painting.... though i probably spend more than that thinking about paintings daily.... concepts and whatnot. but actual painting, at least 15mins every night. i think i will.

    love,
    anna

  • So it took you 15 minutes to write this blog?

  • 15 minutes a day, huh? sounds pretty weak. let me know when you're up to 3 or 4 hrs.

  • Actually, the blog is extra credit.

  • I love writing, but I love reading too. I wish I had more time for both. I'm thankful for the words either way.. Imagine writing without words.. ewww. . . sounds sticky.

  • Every time I write for 15 minutes, it turns into a blog, and then I've gone and shared too much information again. Embarrassing my friends (which is weird, because  none of the information has anything to do with them) and people start to look at me funny.

  • 15 minute routines are a safe regiment, but don't allow that to stifle the natural flow of brilliance. 15 minutes should be the minimum commitment. Try dabbling in various styles, even as you compose your weblog... look back on it and make additions and subtractions. Beautify it with introspection, and a bit of the King's English if need be. lol
